Tap Tap Tap.

That's the sound the boots made as they strode down a stone path alongside a beautiful blue lake, glistening in morning rays that glided down from the Sun. A man with grayish white hair was the owner of those boots, his blue eyes cast downwards as his right hand flicking aside the pages of a book that rested in the grasp of his left. This man was Fate Valentine.

A nice morning indeed. He thought to himself as he made his way down the winding cobblestone road. Visibility was high for a lake called Misty, but that didn't bother him in the slightest, he was content with whatever weather, as long as he was at peace. Fairies flew overhead, playing games and calling eachother names. Yes.

This was Gensokyo.

The place he called home.

Galenn surveyed the area and quickly spotted the book-reading man. She never had much use for books, but she was curious about why he was here. The lake wasn't Misty as usual, a oddity, but she didn't care, she rarely came here at all. She watched him from some nearby trees, wondering if she should introduce herself.

Fate stopped in his tracks, the musical essence of another soul filling his senses, it was different from the fairies and he decided it'd be in his interest to discover who was making it. Without even turning around or looking up from his book, he called out softly. "I know you're spying on me...why don't you act like a civilized being and greet me properly?"

"Wow, so you noticed me? Impressive..." Galenn walked out, ready to unveil her claws at any second. "I don't know how, seeing as you didn't turn around, but that power is interesting... who are you?"

"My name is Fate Valentine." He said turning around, but he continued to read. "I wouldn't get hostile if I were you, I'm not in the mood to fight, so why don't you get those thoughts out of your head right now?" He held up a finger. "No, I'm not reading your mind, your facial expressions and aura are just very easy to interpret."

"My... aura?" Galenn looked worried and warapped herself in her arms, as though he was somehow seeing through her clothes. "What does that mean?" And why not fight? She wasn't sure what else there was to do, but this guy seemed perfectly fine with ignoring her, unlike most of the youkai she'd met. So... talk it was. "And what are you reading?"

Fate looked up from his book for a moment, as anything about books interested him. "This is a book on how Gensokyo was formed, naturally I was there, but I was only a small boy, so I want to refresh my memory." He looked back down at it. "You're probably wondering why I'm different than most Youkai, that's what everyone wonders. Why am I not giving into my instincts? Why won't I fight? Why won't I kill and eat?" He sighed. "It's because I'm not a savage, I have my own morals and standards. After all, I'm no oridinary Youkai, I am Half-Oni and Half-Vampire."

"Oh... you must be really old then, I'm just 30 or so..." She didn't bother to keep track these days, she didn't see the point, not since her sisters... passed. She was saddened by the thought, but she shoved it down as she always did. Turning her attention back to him, she wondered what the book said. She had heard knowledge was a kind of power, after all. She walked over. "Umm, I can't read, what does it say?"

Fate looked up again. "Nothing that you would find interesting, although I bet the ability to read is rare with most." He closed it shut. "In any case, I must be going." He looked to the east. "I sense...something wrong." He teleported away.

Galenn stomped the ground angrily. "Hey, you could have at least taken me with you, jerk!" She tried to be nice for once, and he just brushed her off! Oh, he would be in for the fight of his life when she caught up with him... and he said something was wrong. Galenn smiled, thinking this could mean a fight for her, and even if he took care of it, at least she could finally see what he was capable of, a tremendous advantage. "Maybe I can't just vanish like that, but I'm one of the fastest in Gensokyo! You won't escape me, Fate!" She flew off east, surprising the nearby fairies when what seemed to be a rocket made of wind shot past them.
